It amazes me how there is soooo much talent in our own backyard, yet we search long and far for music, artists, producers, etc to support. Over the past year or so, I have been exposed to some of the most talented people whom I have probably walked right by during a mid-afternoon stroll at Easton. So in light of what I just mentioned, I’m going to take the initiative to begin recognizing some of the talent that we have right here in our own city, and in our own state. I think many of you would be truly surprised by the number of our peers who are out here making things move and shake. People like to down “local” talent because they haven’t yet made it to that sold out show arena, or been published in that award-winning magazine, but how do we expect them to get there if they can’t even gain recognition in the same neighborhoods in which they roam.
So who better to kick off this new feature on the site than our very own… @DjDurl. If you don’t know him by his name or by his face, I can guarantee you that you know him by his hands. One of THEE most knowledgeable and skilled djs that I have come across, Durl constantly shows us that there is so much more to djing than just throwing some songs on a playlist and hoping that the crowd likes it. There is truly an art to this.
I had the awesome pleasure of sitting down with the man behind the “who’s ya girl’s favorite dj” himself, and I must say…although I thought I already knew him, my interview with him brought out a side not many of us are lucky to see. So without further adieu….meet Dj Durl.
Darrell O’Neal aka Dj Durl, is a Dayton native, and younger brother to one, who studied Psychology and Education at Wright State University, an awesome DJ, and an even better friend.
Durl has been scratching since his toddler days when he played with his Disney storytelling records on his dad’s record player. His extreme interest in music is what sparked his desire to become a dj, along with being inspired by dj greats like Dj Jazzy Jeff and Dj Jelly of Atlanta. Surprisingly enough, his least favorite place to Dj is the club. Now while he does enjoy it, he actually prefers djing at the non-conventional or traditional settings, with his greatest experience being djing at an art museum.
Along w/ being the dj for 6 radio shows on dpsradio.com, he has also been invited to dj weddings, private parties, as well as charity events and has also dj’d at a show featuring artist Talib Kweli. He is a member of the ‘Usual Suspects Crew’, and one of the prime creators of Familiar Face Radio aka FFR, which we have all come to know and love. Durl states he would love the opportunity to become a dj on a Sirius satellite radio show or even travel internationally as a dj. His overall measure of success is a crowd’s reaction to his performance. He states that the most rewarding part of his job is being able to inspire those around him through his music. If you haven’t yet experienced Durl rock a crowd, make sure you check him out 6.29.2012 at the next #ABCParty at Republic Night Lounge.
Also make sure you check him out on our own #SAT20s Tuesday nights at 8:30; Wednesday nights on The #DezAndDurlTakeover at 10; and Thursday nights on #KingsRoweRadio at 8:30 and then his own show #FFR at 10.
